Sanjay Manjrekar’s album titled “Rest Day “ released somewhere around 1994-1995. I still have the audio cassette. Sachin had requested Sanjay to sing his favourite number from Hum Dono – Rafi the singer, Dev Anand on screen , music by Jaidev
Listen to the lyrics penned down by Sahir Ludhianvi and you will realise Sachin’s cricketing life has been in perfect sync with every line in that song
For those who don’t understand Hindi – I’ve attempted to translate the meaning of this song
Main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya
Har fikr ko dhuein mein udata chala gayaI continued my journey hand-in-hand with life and kept warding off every worry I faced
Barbadiyon ka afsoz manana fizool tha
Barbadiyon ka jashn manata chala gayaIt was futile to lament over the ruins and so I decided to celebrate those ruins
Jo mil gaya usi ko muqaddar samajh liya
Jo kho gaya main usko bhulata chala gayaI accepted as my fate whatever life had to offer and I never looked back at things I had lost
Gham aur khushi mein fark na mehsoos ho jahaan Main dil ko us makaam pe lata chala gaya
I have attempted to reach a point in my life where one experiences no difference between sorrow and joy
A chapter closed today – an era ended – a part of life now lost in the past.
Only the memories remain – a multitude of them.
That’s a beautiful, fitting and concise tribute, Minal.
Thank you Nicole 🙂 Those teenage memories have been imprinted on the mind forever! I have heard that album and this song a million times! 🙂
Helmet Pehne, Ballaa Pakde, Chaltaa Tho wo Shaan se,
Pratidvandi Kaape thad thad thad thad sunke Uska naam re,
Kad thaa uskaa Chota sa, aur sarpat uski Chaal re,
Aakhon mein thi chamak aur chaltaa Seena Taan ke…
Bande mein thaa dum..
Waiting for the whole poem to be out 😛
Good one Amit
The guy decides to get some rest… after delivering years and years of memories and smiles and joys 🙂 a completely apt song for him 🙂
🙂 It’s his favourite for a reason Dhiren :)?
absolutely… he was a simple cricket loving (human) guy… he simply loved scoring runs…
for a nation starved of heroes… we always over expected… but like he famously said… he turned stones into milestones:) truly zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya 🙂
Minal, I always think about that album. I guess Kumble asked Sanjay to sing “Ruk jana nahi tu kahbi haar kar”. I got to know sachins favorite song through that album.
Let me share the fact that Sachin is my alllllllllllllll time favoriteeeeeee cricketer. His ODI retirement was an emotional moment for me. You have explained the song wonderfully in the context. Thanks for writing on sachin.
“tyachya sarkha toch ahe”.
Ashutosh –
Kumble asked for Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna and Srinath for Ruk Ja Na Nahi 🙂 Sachin was a phenomenon – we should be blessed to have seen his entire career! 🙂
